However, planners are also considered the most sustainable type compared to other low content books. This is the reason why most self-publishing writers leverage on creating planners that target various niches. For example, you could create a garden planner or a small business planner.

When you are doing something for the first time, there is a tendency to overthink. When writing your low content book, the first thing you need to keep in mind is to stick with what you know. List down topics that you are already familiar with.

This will allow you to generate ideas for your low content book. Another critical factor is to get a clear idea of what your target market is. This will help in ensuring that your creation will be a success. You may have an idea of creating a planner for people who are animal lovers. While this is a good start, it can be better to have a more specific audience like people who love dogs. Go for a specific group but with a decent level of demand.

You can spend long hours listing down a wide variety of topics, or you can simplify it by creating a list of sub-ideas out of one topic. You can create a template for one topic and then diversify it by considering different target markets as you move forward. Or you can use Amazon. After some research I found buying and reselling textbooks an idea people agree on. However I also read mostly on Amazon own seller central blog that several books and textbooks in particular are increasingly becoming restricted items for small and not so small sellers, a policy that started about a year ago.

What are your thoughts about how these restrictions affect the business of selling books, and more specifically textbooks, for small time sellers? Just more hoops to jump through, a little less opportunity, and more risk if you resell any book with publishers: Pearson Education, Cengage Learning and McGraw Hill Education.

I think that all stems from Amazon getting subpoenaed by these 3 large publishers, in an attempt to go after the 3rd party sellers selling counterfeit textbooks. If Amazon restricts certain textbooks, and you are finding good deals locally, you can always sell those restricted ones on eBay and other marketplaces.

The thing is, once counterfeit textbooks enter the supply, they can end up at used bookstores, thrift stores, etc. So it is kind of risky, especially if selling from those three publishers, as it seems they are actively going after individual sellers.

As far as diversifying a business model — in terms of Amazon business models, its best to expand into several methods to diversify your income source. So for example, start adopting several strategies to make money on Amazon i. I liked the PDAs for all day scouting because you can have a bunch of backup batteries. However the phones now have much longer batteries and quick charge, so you could also use your phone if it has a good battery life.

The most important aspect, in my opinion, is the speed of the scanner. So if you use a phone, I recommend a Bluetooth scanner. If you have a PDA you can use a Bluetooth scanner or one that fits on the top. It really all depends. There are some vintage books that do really well. Some are definitely worth it, but a lot are not. But if you are into vintage, definitely check out Abebooks.

Just wanted to add to my last comment. Thanks for the tip, Frank. I have never personally done anything like that. Do you have any advice for anyone else that may be interested — how do you establish a relationship with your library like that? Do you just start a dialogue with them and inquire if they need someone to take their surplus of books? In my area, they typically have continual book sales and bigger sales once every few months or so depending on the library.

I doubt most of the libraries near me would give away a lot of books since they are always selling them. But who knows, they could just have an overabundance and donate many that I am not aware of. Do you feel like you get a lot of valuable books out of the lots? Either way that sounds like an excellent way to source books, thanks again for telling us about that tip!

Sometimes when we read these thoughts and insights, we will have arrived at similar conclusions ourselves. More often, an author will shed fresh, unexpected light on an issue. And our understanding of that issue is deepened or even changed, making us grow as a person.

As you know, novels fall into two distinct groups: genre fiction and literary fiction. The third type, mainstream fiction, sits somewhere between the two. Still speaking broadly…. But it seems to me that you need to provide both these things, whatever category of fiction you plan to write. Sure, genre fiction must always put entertainment first in the form of a great plot.

And readers of literary fiction will expect deep characterization, word-perfect writing and a philosophical exploration of theme at the expense of such a fast-paced plot.

And you must do both of these things, whatever type of novel you write. Providing lots of entertainment but little understanding, or vice versa, is a trap to avoid. Bottom line? To my mind, there are only two types of fiction that matter: good novels and bad novels. And you can find both varieties in every section of the bookstore. It is to entertain and provide understanding of the human condition.

Bad novels provide entertainment or understanding. But only good novels provide both. The final step is to narrow down to your specific niche. The odds are that you already have. We all have our favorite niche writers, and the chances are that you plan to write fiction very similar to one of those writers albeit in your own unique way. Read as many books as you can by writers who operate in the same niche.
